The Greenhouse is the most important building you will ever unlock. It is a 116-tile enclosed space that ignores the seasons, never has weather, and never lets crops wither. Once you have it, you can grow Ancient Fruit year-round and build the wine empire that defines the late game. This guide covers how to get it, how to lay it out, and what to grow.

How to unlock it

You earn the Greenhouse by completing the Pantry room of the Community Center (see the community center guide) or by paying Joja to restore it. Either path takes roughly a year of farming because the Pantry needs all four seasons of crops. The moment it is restored, the broken glass structure north of the farmhouse becomes usable.

The exterior also has a 10-tile border where you can plant fruit trees — they grow even though the tiles are technically outside the planting area, and they do not block the interior.

The 116 tiles

Inside, you get 116 tillable tiles in a 10x12 plot, with a central water feature you cannot remove (it sits in the middle, leaving 116 of the 120 tiles plantable). The key constraints:

Layout principles

Most players use one of two layouts:

Maximum Ancient Fruit (endgame): Fill every interior tile with Ancient Fruit and surround the whole thing with Iridium Sprinklers placed on the border ring, watering inward. Because Iridium Sprinklers cover a 5x5 area (24 tiles), a few of them handle all 116 plants. Add a Seed Maker inside so you can propagate new plants from harvested fruit instead of buying them.

Mixed utility (early Greenhouse): Until you have enough Ancient Fruit, grow high-value seasonal crops that you process: Starfruit in summer, Pumpkin in fall, and Strawberries when you have extras. A row of preserves jars or a corner of kegs inside the Greenhouse lets you process without walking to a separate shed.

Best crops to grow

Fruit trees on the border

The perimeter of the Greenhouse is ideal for fruit trees because they do not need watering and free up the interior for sprinkler-fed crops. A full ring of trees gives daily fruit you can turn into wine or jelly. Banana trees are especially nice because they also drop bananas you can give as gifts.

Sprinkler coverage

An Iridium Sprinkler waters the 24 tiles in a 5x5 area around it, so 6 of them cover the whole interior when placed on the border ring. Until you can craft that many (each needs 1 Iridium Bar, 1 Gold Bar, 1 Battery Pack), use Quality Sprinklers (8 tiles in a 3x3) as a stopgap. The sprinkler guide has exact grid patterns.

Connecting to kegs

The Greenhouse grows the fruit; kegs make the money. A common setup is a separate shed full of kegs (see the buildings guide) so the Greenhouse stays a clean farm and the shed does processing. The keg vs jar guide explains why wine wins for fruit.

A sample endgame loop

  1. Unlock Greenhouse via the Pantry.
  2. Plant 116 Ancient Fruit (propagate via Seed Maker; do not buy them all).
  3. Ring the interior with Iridium Sprinklers.
  4. Build 100+ kegs in a shed.
  5. Harvest every 7 days, load kegs, collect wine, repeat forever.

This loop, once established, generates tens of thousands of gold per week with almost no active labor. It is the reason veteran players call the Greenhouse the real “end” of Stardew Valley.

Exceptions and notes

The fruit-tree border in detail

The Greenhouse perimeter holds a full ring of fruit trees because trees do not need watering and ignore the interior planting rules. A common choice is Banana (tropical, drops giftable fruit), Pomegranate, and Peach for preserves. Leave two-tile gaps so trees do not block each other’s growth; up to 18 trees fit around the border.

Process inside or in a shed?

You can place kegs inside the Greenhouse, but most players keep processing in a separate shed to avoid clutter and to use the Greenhouse purely for growing. The buildings guide covers shed sizing; aim for a shed that holds your full keg count so the Greenhouse stays a clean 116-tile field.

Year one versus year two

In year one the Greenhouse is a luxury you are still filling; grow high-value seasonal crops and a few Ancient Fruit to start the Seed Maker chain. By year two, once you have enough Ancient Fruit and Iridium Sprinklers, convert it fully to the permanent wine setup. The transition is gradual, not a single switch, which is why the Greenhouse stays relevant across the whole mid-to-late game.
