“Which crop is most profitable?” is the question every Stardew player asks, and almost every answer online is wrong because it compares sell price, not profit per day including processing and regrowth. This guide does the math the way our Crop Profit Calculator does, and shows the result that surprises people: Ancient Fruit is the long-run king even though Starfruit wins a single summer.
The formula that actually matters
For a one-shot crop:
profit_per_day = (sell_price − seed_cost) / growth_days
For a regrowing crop (strawberry, blueberry, cranberry, ancient fruit):
total_days = growth_days + (harvests − 1) × regrow_days
profit_per_day = (sell_price × harvests − seed_cost) / total_days
Then processing multiplies the sell price: Wine = 3× fruit base, Jelly = 2× + 50g, Juice = 2.25×, Pickles = 2× + 50g (Artisan profession adds +40% to all of these). We’ll use wine as the comparison because fruit is where the real money is.
The numbers (verified against game 1.6.x)
| Crop | Seed | Grow / Regrow | Harvests in season | Wine value | Profit/day (wine) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Fruit | 0 (seed maker) | 28d / 7d | ~9 (spring→fall) | 1,650g | ~177g/day |
| Starfruit | 400g | 13d / — | 1 (summer) | 2,250g | ~142g/day |
| Strawberry | 100g | 8d / 4d | ~8 (spring) | 360g | ~77g/day |
| Blueberry | 40g | 13d / 4d | ~10 (summer) | 150g | ~30g/day |
| Cranberries | 120g | 7d / 5d | ~6 (fall) | 225g | ~38g/day |
| Pumpkin | 50g | 13d / — | 1 (fall) | 960g | ~70g/day |
| Hops | 60g | 11d / 1d | ~13 (summer) | 300g (Pale Ale) | ~21g/day |
| Pineapple | 1 Magma Cap (Island Trader) | 14d / 7d | ~6 (Ginger Island) | 900g | ~110g/day |
Note on Ancient Fruit: it has no seed cost — you propagate it free with a Seed Maker (unlocked via the Community Center). That zero base cost, combined with 7-day regrowth across three seasons, is what pushes its per-day return above Starfruit despite a lower per-harvest price.
Why Ancient Fruit wins the long run
Starfruit sells for more per fruit (750g vs 550g) and makes more per jar, but:
- It’s summer-only — one harvest, 13 days, then the season’s over.
- It costs 400g per seed from Sandy’s Oasis (a limited 200g stock also appears at the Night Market).
- Ancient Fruit grows spring, summer, AND fall, regrowing every 7 days, for free once you have a Seed Maker.
Over a full year of Greenhouse or Ginger Island plots, Ancient Fruit’s compounding regrowth dwarfs Starfruit’s single big payout. The exception: if you only have a summer field and no Greenhouse, Starfruit (or Hops for pale ale) is the better one-season play.
Fertilizer: the quiet lever
Fertilizer doesn’t change base price — it changes the quality of what you harvest, which multiplies sell (and wine) value:
| Fertilizer | Effect on quality | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| None | baseline | 0 |
| Basic | +chance of Silver/Gold | cheap, craftable |
| Quality | more Silver/Gold | more expensive |
| Deluxe | adds Iridium chance | top tier |
Because wine multiplies whatever quality you get, Deluxe Fertilizer on Ancient Fruit is the single highest-ROI input once you have a Greenhouse full of it.
The throughput trap: kegs vs jars at scale
You’ll read “kegs are better” everywhere. They are — per item. But a keg takes 7 days and one fruit; a Preserves Jar takes 2–3 days and one fruit. When you have 200 strawberries ripening every 4 days, you don’t have 200 kegs. The practical rule (detailed in the keg vs jar guide): kegs for your top-value crops, jars for the rest, because throughput beats per-item margin at scale.
A worked three-season comparison
Say you have one Greenhouse plot (116 tiles) and Artisan profession:
- Ancient Fruit: 116 plants × ~177g/day ≈ 20,500g/day (base wine).
- Starfruit (summer only, 116 plants): ~142g/day × 116 ≈ 16,500g/day, but only during summer — roughly a third of the annual coverage.
The Greenhouse lets Ancient Fruit run all year; Starfruit can’t. That’s why the long-run number favors Ancient Fruit even though its per-harvest price is lower.
Applicable conditions and exceptions
- All values assume Normal quality, no fertilizer, and base wine values (no Artisan profession; the +40% Artisan bonus would scale every wine row equally and preserve the rankings). Gold/Iridium quality shifts numbers but not rankings.
- The per-day column assumes you can process every harvest (enough kegs/jars on hand); it measures growing-day return, not keg-throughput limits. The calculator models machine throughput separately.
- Greenhouse / Ginger Island is required to realize Ancient Fruit’s three-season advantage. In an open-field single season, Starfruit or Pumpkin leads.
- Sweet Gem Berry (3000g from the Fair) looks like the winner but it’s a one-time fall crop with a 1000g seed and no processing — it doesn’t compound, so it’s a lump sum, not a profit engine.
- Figures are 1.6.x. The 1.7 update may adjust values; the calculator’s data file is version-marked and re-checked before each major patch.
Crop vs animal vs fish income
Crops aren’t the only late-game engine, so it helps to compare them against the alternatives. Animals give mayo (190g from a 50g egg) or cheese (300g from a 125g milk) with almost no daily labor, but they need upfront coops/barns and daily petting. Fish ponds give roe and caviar passively but take weeks to ramp. Crops win on pure per-tile throughput once you have a Greenhouse full of Ancient Fruit and enough kegs. The practical mix for most players: a Greenhouse of Ancient Fruit for the backbone, a few ponds for caviar, and animals for low-effort filler. The money-making guide ranks all of these by effort versus payoff if you want the full picture.
Buying seeds without breaking the bank
Seeds are an upfront cost that the per-day math amortizes across the season. For high-value one-shot crops (Starfruit, Pumpkin) the seed bill is real: 116 Starfruit seeds from Sandy cost 23,200g. You need that liquidity before the Greenhouse pays off. For regrowers, one seed keeps paying all season, so they are safer for tight budgets. The calculator’s seed_cost term is what keeps these bets honest instead of optimistic.
